Types of Early Intervention for Autism

There are many different types of early intervention for individuals with autism across different domains to be addressed.

Behavioral Interventions include:

ABA therapy- based on behavior analysis science that utilizes reinforcement strategies to increase positive behaviors and decrease behaviors that are harmful or interfere with learning.

Pivotal Response Treatment- focuses on improving autonomy, self-control, and social initiative, which are pivotal skills that affect a great number of behaviors.

Early Start Denver Model- early and intensive sensory-motor behavioural intervention strategy aimed at young children with autism which incorporates the applied behaviour analysis, developmental and relationship based approaches.

Developmental Interventions:

Developmental, individual differences, relationship-based model- emotional and relational development (feelings, relationship with caregivers). It also highlights ways children handle the realities of seeing, hearing, and smelling through floortime.

Relationship Development Intervention-

family-oriented behavior therapy of the autism-specific symptoms.

Communication and Language Interventions:

PECS- Picture Exchange communication systems

AAC- Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Speech therapy

Sensory-based Interventions:

Sensory Integration therapy- making the individual to cope with the sensory stimuli like sights, sounds and smells. 

Occupational Therapy- focuses on engaging individuals with different requirements involving cognitive, physical, sensory and motor skills to empower them and boost their self-confidence.

Educational Interventions:

Social Skills Training

Structured Teaching

Individualized Education Program (IEP)
